1823年 Purkinje在發表描述指紋的論文，他根據紋線型態首先將指紋分成九種。
1926年美國解剖學家Cummins和Midlo首創皮紋學（Dermatoglyphics）這個專業術語。
1967年 在英國倫敦舉行「國際皮紋學研究會議」，確定了分類的方法，包括脊紋三角點和紋線量化之規則等。
1982年 由英國著名人類學家、優生學創始人Galto在所出版的「指紋」一書中，首次提出以斗紋、箕紋和弧紋等三種指紋的基本分類法。
